The Importance of Mulching

If you have read our blogs before, you know that we always talk about the importance of mulching especially during the change of seasons. Whether you have an established garden and especially around newly planted trees, mulching should not be overlooked. What Is Mulch?

In simple, mulch is organic material like bark, leaves, compost, wood chips and other off-cuts which have been processed that can be placed around the base of trees, plants and bushes.

Why Mulch?

Mulch provide important benefits to your trees and plants both aesthetically and through functionality. Mulching discourages weed growth while providing important nutrients to the soil. Mulch also conserves the moisture in soil and aids to suffocate unwanted weeds from growing.

Mulch Vs Unwanted Weeds

When mulched is layered around the base of a plant, mulch reduces sunlight and airflow to the unwanted growth effectively restricting any opportunity to grow while allowing your plant to absorb sunlight and the nutrients available in the soil to grow and remain healthy and strong.

Types of Mulch

If you’re recycling at home, you may find yourself using a variety of materials with anything from the grass clippings after mowing your lawn to leaves, food scraps, or even shredded newspaper.

When our customers contact us for mulch, we offer two types of mulch. We have fresh mulch and aged garden mulch.

Fresh Mulch Vs Aged Mulch

As their name suggests, fresh mulch is simply freshly made vs mulch which has been aged. Fresh mulch is generally sound for most gardens and lasts longer than aged mulch however takes away more nitrogen from the soil in comparison to aged mulch so for plants like citrus trees, rose bushes or new plants, aged mulch is recommended.
